Fast-Track-14: Overview

Fast-Track-14 (FT-14) provides participating companies with access to a collaborative online environment featuring a sophisticated interactive electronic 'ISO 14001 Toolkit'. This is complemented by a series of locally-held monthly peer-group workshops attended by key company managers.

The toolkit acts as the managers' personal implementation consultant as they build a fully-customised EMS in their workplace with colleagues.

A Gap Analyser in the toolkit begins by probing managers' understanding of the business to establish their status and the journey ahead. This alone can save weeks of original research.

The seven, monthly, half-day workshops.provide a forum for managers to report progress, troubleshoot problems and share ideas with peers from other companies The workshops also serve to provide advice and guidance from experts and have swiftly gained a reputation for “putting some fun into ISO 14001”.

Participants sharing best practice at an FT-14 group meeting.

By removing delays and knowledge gaps, FT-14 shortens implementation time from often years to just 6 months.

FT-14 is particularly significant for organisations wishing to “green” their supply chains in response to commercial and legislative pressures. By insisting on ISO 14001 certification, they are asking contractors to play their part in reducing risk and improve business efficiency.

It's accepted that construction industry SMEs in particular have not benefited from ISO 14001 in the past because it has been perceived as not relevant for smaller companies and hard to achieve.

By removing barriers to implementation and focussing managers and their companies on business efficiency and stakeholders, FT-14 addresses these concerns. Although, it has to be said that a commitment to hard work is essential to complete FT-14, but the rewards are sustainable.

ISYS Sustainability Director John Betts discusses FT-14 with Jonathan Porritt.
